To Buy or Not to Buy a Continuous Ink System

Continuous ink systems are great money savers when it comes to printing on inkjet printers. However, it is not always a good idea for you to buy them for yourself.

More and more printer users are switching to the continuous ink system because they have come to believe that this system is the more economical choice over regular inkjet printer cartridges and even over most replacement inks available in the market today. The continuous ink system, also known as the continuous flow system, simply gives more ink for the same price.

There is no doubt that the continuous flow system is good. However, before you buy one, you should ask yourself the big question: Should you really buy a continuous flow system, or should you stick to your regular brand of inkjet printer cartridges?

When to Buy a Continuous Ink System

The continuous ink system, as we have mentioned above, gives more ink than a set of regular inkjet printer cartridges for the same price. Let us take as an example the Epson Stylus PHOTO R200. A typical set of six cartridges for this printer would cost around £71.94. A corresponding unit of continuous flow system with six bottles of ink would cost £69.99.

There is not a lot of difference, is there? However, a bottle of ink in a continuous flow system often contains 100mL of ink, ten times more than a regular inkjet cartridge.

For heavy printer ink users, those who produce a lot of digital photo prints on a regular basis, getting a continuous ink system is a very economical choice. This system provides more ink for the same price, thus allowing printer users to be able to print more for a lot less, without suffering any decrease in the quality of the print.

This also eliminates the fear that some printer users have of running out of ink right in the middle of a printing job. Most of all, the inks in a continuous flow system can be used right to the last drop; thus, no ink is wasted.

Do Not Buy a Continuous Ink System If...

A continuous ink system is convenient for people who use inks heavily for their printing jobs. The same, however, does not apply to people who only use their printers for producing text documents, or who do not use their printers a lot at all. Ink is still ink regardless of the brand or the delivery system. They will dry out if they are not used.

Another problem that you may encounter with the continuous flow system is its mode of installation. It can be very messy, and the inks can leave a permanent stain on the clothes you are wearing and your work area if you do not put a protective sheet over them whilst you install the system on your printer.

An accidental overflow may also cause the ink to flood the printer, which will damage the printer. You would not be able to get the printer fixed at a repair shop accredited by its manufacturer because using inks other than the ones sold by the printer’s manufacturer voids its warranty.

Continuous ink systems are great alternatives to regular inkjet cartridges, and this explains their popularity in the last few years. However, just because continuous ink systems are good or popular, it does not mean that they are right for you.
