The Innovative - Napster - Now Presents Fresh Products

By: Isaiah Henry

If you are over eighteen and have been downloading music for awhile, chances are the first site you visited was Napster. There is a good reason you probably used Napster early on; they were the only game in town for quite some time. More than half of a million songs were downloaded daily from Napster when it was at its height of popularity. Music industry execs began to fight Napsters release of music; claiming that it had been pirated. Eventually, the music industry won the battle but not the war. Napster was down for a short time but has since come back and is once again a successful source for music downloads.

Once the only music downloading site, Napster drew 500,000 visitors and downloads daily. Accused of providing pirated music, they were shut down by music companies legal eagles. They were up again and operating in short order and are once again a prominent player amongst music downloading sites. The folks at Napster seem to have an ability to reinvent their company whenever and however it is necessary to do so.

So far, the vast majority of major record labels continue to hold back from allowing their music to be download as MP3 files on music download sites that is, unless they can be assured that proper protection and technology is in place. The significant decline in CD sales may eventually force record labels to rethink their decisions. What may well be the final catalyst for record companies to release some control is the overwhelming success of Apple, with its iPod and iTunes Music Store. While Apple does not produce the only MP3 players (others like Zune do too), they certainly produce the most popular and most widely used.

Even now, the majority of big record labels continue to refrain from allowing music to be downloaded as MP3 files. They are more inclined to do so if the sites can guarantee adequate protection and proper technology. They may be forced to begin releasing more MP3 files due to the drastic decrease that has been seen in recent years in CD sales. Large numbers of people (especially those aged 16-25) never go to a music store anymore; they download their music from the internet. The technology is so widespread and easy to use; they see no reason to trek to the local mall to buy music. The final straw for the music industry to induce them to release MP3 files may well be the overwhelming success that Apple iTunes and iPod experience. Apple does not produce the only MP3 player, but the iPod outsells every other MP3 players many times over.

What Napster will have in common with other MP3 downloading sites is the industrys reluctance to release MP3 files. Most of the major record labels are not interested in doing so... not yet, anyway. It appears the time is quickly approaching when they will have to release more of their MP3 music. The industry, as a whole, has lost Billions of dollars in lost revenue in recent years.

Chris Gorog, CEO of Napster, recently said he was happy with the progress of his company. He also said he felt better now that Napster could join music download site giants, like Apple and Amazon on a more level playing field.
