Solar Power - The mystique behind this green energy source and why its prudent to buy them.

By: Peter Bakersfield

Solar panels can be made to convert the limitless energy from our sun into another type of useful energy. In general the resultant power will be available in the form of heat (to heat water for example) or electricity which might be used to energize anything from a small flashlight to a complete home.In this article we are going to talk about the bigger residential and industrial panels which are designed to provide energy for the entire home or business, where such panels are typically placed on the top of the home or close to the building if space permits. We are going to concentrate our discussion on the kind of panels that generate electrical energy known as Photovoltaic panels.Solar panels are the perfect way to cut energy costs and to lower your greenhouse gas footprint, and to become more self-sufficient. They are now becoming popular in dense urban areas where green electricity advocates and law makers are creating incentives for this friendly and quiet alternative power source. The state of Utah, for example, has been offering massive rebates on up-front capital cost in purchasing and implementing a residential solar system. After the panels are operational, energy from the solar system is used to energize the house, or, when power is being generated in excess of what is being used, diverted back to the grid, where it is purchased back by the utility provider. There may actually be times when you are making revenue from your panels. With rebates factored into the cost it will generally take from 17 to twenty-three years to recoup the initial investment, at which time the system will essentially be generating energy from the sun for free. One little-considered fact, however, is that solar systems are initially contributory to greenhouse emissions because it requires an input of energy to build a solar panel, that this power is very often carbon-based, and front-end loaded, and therefore there is a time period during which the solar panel has actually added to carbon emissions rather than subtracted from them. Until the solar panel has produced power that is equivalent to the energy used to manufacture it (its fossil-emission payback period) it is actually a net contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. This fossil-emission payback period is normally considered to be six to nine years.Low power solar panels are generally available in 12 v or 14 v configurations, while high power panels are available in 24 v. As solar panels are DC, you would normally require a power inverter that changes it from one-voltage as DC into high-voltage Alternating Current to make it compatible with the energy that enters the house and the grid.Conventional solar panels are made of twin sheets of semiconducting silicon, doped with phosphorus and boron particles. New technologies such as Amorphous silicon solar cells are a powerful, emerging array of photovoltaics that differ in output, structure, and manufacture than traditional photovoltaics that use crystalline silicon. The H-AS solar cells are constructed in the same way, but they are made just 1 micrometer thick by depositing polymorphous silicon at high pressures and temperatures. Solar panels are generally maintenance free and many manufacturing companies will give a warranty of electrical output often for as long as 30 years.Solar panels are normally installed on whichever side of your house that gets the most solar exposure. In those locations that are south of the equatorial line this is the north-facing aspect, and in locations that are north of the equator its the south-facing aspect.
