Show Me Your Watch

By: Arnold Ahlstrom

“Show Me Your Watch then I shall tell youyour nature”! I amstealing this saying from a Scandinavian saying, but in Scandinavia the subject was shoes. Wristwatch or shoes – the message is the same; it's not a coincidence what you put on!
Being a shrink I have dealt withnumerouspeople of different circumctances. Having dealt with perhaps more than100.000 people in the various vocations I have had, I have not only started to seecommon denominators in dress and demeanour between people of the approximate age, with similar line of work, the same strengths, weaknesses likes and dislikes, etc.; as a matter of fact, I have actually begun to categorize them in my head. And you will see that I am not by any means unique havingthisexperience or expertise.
Many people go to a fortune-teller, absolutely certain that he or she havesome unexplainable ability to seeup-comingthings. People think it is sobecausethe fortune-teller have told them so much about them “that they could not possibly know”.
But they do not know the secrets of the trade, that the clothes they are wearing, their choice of accessories, their hairdos , the companionship they keep , (and how they treat each-other), their gestures, if their eyes are shifty, if they are clean and neat and shaved, the level of language a person use, etc., speaks volumes about a persons past and present. An abilityto pick up on these queues does not make fortune-tellers into oracles.
Most likely everybody is doing this evaluating of people, based on what people adorn themselves with, and how they behave. How successful one is at it is a matter of talent, interest and how many people one is exposed to over the years. And of course; the abilitywill be aquired with greater speed after having become aware of the phenomena itself. What I mean is; everybody is doing it, but very few are aware of that they are in fact doing it, and that it can be beneficial to them.
So, being very much aware I challenge you; “let me see your watch”. This is a very risky thing to say, of course, after all, a watch is just one single stimulus to make a total judgement upon. how much easier it would beif I saw the person come up to me and deliver his watch. In such a case I would seethe way he dressed , his hair-style, the way he walked, his eyes, his body language, and, finally, the watch. Of course, the watchwould hardly be needed to make the evaluation Sometimes it is quite easy to see who’s the typical wearer of a watch. With such watches it is possible to be very detailed in describing the wearer. And then there are wristwatches that are close to impossible to read. So, the analysis of the owner of suchwatches must by necessity be very sketchy. Everywatch analysis mustbe looked upon symbolically. For instance; if the description suggests that the owner is someone who is a plumber, it should not be thought of as a failure if he happens to be a carpenter. When all is said and done, they both have the same hours, work at the same place, the same work-clothes, the same employer, etc. It even happens that they do each other's jobs, too.
What's the whole idea of doing something like this, anyway? I can think of many good reasons. It is easy to seethat analysing physical objects is just one littlepart of forensic psychology, which is quite useful in some cases. Forensic psychologists, though, have huge databases where they can place all the information about everything. Others will have to rely upon their brains; which is good, since there will never be any databasesmade that would be able to includeevery type of object, such as watches.
Owner analysis could also aid those who sell watches to find a watch to a specificclient. And looking at it from the other side, it can help someone find a wristwatchwhich is compatible with who they are. If they find a watch they like, and the analysis describes them close enough, then, chances are.
Another situation when this analysis can be of use is when you make new friends, and a picture of that person starts to emerge, you can use this analysis to give strength to your own opinion about this person, or not! It must never be used on its own!
The main reason for providing watch-analysis is pure entertainment. One should rememberthat watcheswere sold long before they were analyzed, and it seemed to work fine.
