I’ll admit it. Before I started researching vacuums online, I had never heard of Miele or used any of their products. After using the S558i Red Velvet, however, I am happy to start singing the praises of the German company’s wonderfully made canister vacuum. With finger tip controls for the six-levels of power and HEPA filtration to make vacuuming easier for allergy and asthma sufferers, this Miele Vacuum Cleaners is a pleasure to use. The Red Velvet is an International award winner for design and excellence, and it isn’t difficult to understand why.

I know what you’re thinking. A canister vacuum? Step into the new millenium, man! Embrace the upright. Well, I hate to break it to you, folks, but the Miele S558i Red Velvet made me a believer in the power and functionality of a well-made canister vacuum. Easy to maneuver, the S558i has tremendous suction power for such a lightweight and diminutive machine. You’ll find yourself zipping under and around furniture that would confound any of the uprights. Its 1200 watts of power mean that you’ll have exactly the amount of suction you need just when you need it. The Red Velvet has a softer, textured finish, preventing the canister from dings and scratches.

The S558i features the Miele Sealed System™ with HEPA filtration which retains particulates down to 0.3 micron. (I had to look up what that means, but trust me, it’s a good thing.) Allergy sufferers will be pleased as will those tired of pushing around a massive upright. The Red Velvet maneuvers like a dream and cleans like a pro. It comes with the standard tools that usually accompany a Miele: an upholstery brush, a dusting brush and a crevice nozzle. It also comes with a Parquet hard surface floor brush to take care of your wood and tile floors.

Pros and Cons: On the pro side, the Miele S558i has all the power and panache you would expect from a Miele vacuums. It has an automatic, auto-reverse Cordwinder that keeps the power cord from being a tripping hazard and a nice light to help you see past shadows as you vacuum. The suction motor has a 7-year warranty, which shows how much Miele believes in their engineering. The Sealed System keeps allergens at bay and the bags are super easy to change. As for cons, I’m hard pressed to think of any. I suppose if you are opposed to canister vacuums in general this might not be for you. Bags can be a hassle, but Miele has made the process of changing them as simple as possible.

The Miele S558i Red Velvet is like a classic car that has been refinished. It has a retro look and feel with the power of modern technology. I never dread having to vacuum because the Red Velvet makes the whole process easy – and almost fun. Try the Miele S558i and know what it’s like to have power and style right at your fingertips.
