Contact Lenses- New Options For Old Problems

Many contact designs are available to correct various types of vision problems: Spherical contacts are the typical, rounded design of contact lenses, which can correct myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). Bifocal contact lenses have different zones for near and far vision to correct presbyopia. This is a problem in which the aging eye beginning at approximately age 40 is unable to focus at various distances, often noticed when reading becomes difficult. Other aspects include squinting, eyestrain and headaches.
Orthokeratology, (Ortho-K) is a contact lens used to change the curvature of the cornea on a temporarily. This contact lens is mainly used to correct myopia.
Toric contact lenses are used to address astigmatism, as well as for hyperopia and myopia. Toric contact lenses contain two powers, made with curvatures at different angles (one for astigmatism, the other for either myopia or hyperopia. They are specially created so that they don’t have a lot of movement or rotation. Proclear Multifocal Toric is a monthly replacement contact lens, designed to address both astigmatism and presbyopia. Dry Eyes- In addition to hyperopia, myopia or astigmatism many people also have dry eyes. Dry Eyes means they don’t produce enough tears to keep the eye moist or that the tears that do not have the correct chemical combination. A significant percent of the population experience dry eyes as they get older. There are products that have been developed to address these problems. Acuvue Oaysis for dry eyes is one product. There are also specific products for people who have eyes that are both dry and have astigmatism called Acuvue Oaysis for Astigmatism.
