Bad Economy And Getting Out Of Credit Card Debt

By: Kaile Limon

Everyone knows that the economy in the USA is doing horrible right now. Some people are saying that we are headed into another great depression. Credit card debt in the USA is at an all time high. To go along with this the unemployment rate is also up to around 23%. So debt is high as well as unemployment. These are not the best conditions if we want our economy to turn around and head back up. In these times how does someone with a ton of credit card debt get out of it? There are many solutions people come up with but only a handful ever seem to work. If you want to get out of debt then you have to put in the effort. It’s the only way.

You must come to a basic understanding of how you got into debt in the first place. In America people are obsessed with buying things they cannot afford. People also opt for rewards cards which usually have higher interest rates. They do not do their homework and take the time to search for the best credit card deals. There have been so many lenders that are just happy to fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars to someone for a new home. There are banks and credit card companies giving average people $50,000 limits. This is how we got into the mess in the first place. If you are paying a high APR for a rewards credit card, you might want to do some research and switch to a low APR credit card.

The first thing you need to do when you are trying to get out of debt is “cut the fat”. You are going to cut the fat out of your spending habits. To do this you will sit down and divide your expenses into two different categories. In the first category you will list all of your needs. Needs like this will vary from person to person. They can include things like rent, gas money, food, utility bills, phone bill, etc. It is everything that you need to function as an American citizen.

The second list of categories is going to be everything you are currently spending that you do not need. Things like online movie subscriptions, premium cable channels, gym memberships, country club memberships, etc. The goal is to sit down and figure out how much money you can save each month. Once you have compiled both lists you are going to stop spending money on the second list. The money that you save each month is going to be the money you use to start paying off your current debt.

If you take responsibility for your debt and start managing your finances you will find yourself debt free eventually. It does take time to do this. These are some of the simple things you can do to pay off your credit card debt.
