4 Simple Steps Which You Absolutely Must Take To Get Affordable Health Insurance

By: Donald Saunders

Like a lot of things today purchasing a health insurance plan can be difficult with an enormous number of insurers selling a wide range of policies and all competing against each other for your business. Naturally the secret is to find the best plan to meet your personal needs along with those of your family and to do this at the right price.

If you are purchasing health insurance for the first time, possibly needing to arrange your own cover after years of enjoying cover under an employer's group scheme, then here are 4 simple steps which you must take to ensure that you buy the very best affordable health insurance plan.

1. Start out by deciding exactly how much you can afford to pay for a health insurance plan and then base your search for coverage on this figure.

If you and your family are all fairly young and in good health then you could well discover that it is not all that difficult to find excellent comprehensive cover within your reach. But, if you cannot find a policy at the price you are willing to pay, then do not be enticed to pay more than you can afford!

Pick a policy which matches your budget!

There are many different policies on offer today with many different payment structures. For example, it may suit your needs to find a policy that has a high deductible and low monthly premiums which can also be used under a health savings plan. This would then have the advantage of letting you accumulate cash within your policy to meet the cost of future claims and also qualify for IRS tax relief.

2. Shop around and look at policies being sold by a number of different insurance companies. Make sure that any insurer which you are considering provides cover in your area and will also give you cover if you are traveling out of state for work or simply for pleasure.

3. Having narrowed your options down to perhaps 2 or 3 possible health insurers, research each company very carefully to satisfy yourself that they are both reputable and financially sound. In many cases you will be considering major insurers who have been in business for many years and are common-place 'household' names. But, if the insurer you are considering is not as well known then check them out using an online service such as that provided by A. M. Best. If you are in any doubt whatsoever about a company then you would probably be best advised to simply drop it from your list of possible insurers.

4. One excellent indication of just how good an insurer is the number of complaints which it receives from dissatisfied policy holders. Obviously any insurance company with a high number of complaints and a lot of dissatisfied plan holders is best avoided and, luckily, you can get this information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's website.

Health insurance is very much a consumer product these days and policies come in all shapes and sizes to suit a host of needs. Take the time necessary therefore to acquaint yourself with just what is available in your state and discover the policy that best meets your own requirements. With a bit of time and careful looking you will invariably find an excellent and affordable health insurance plan.
